Oh my goodness…guess who’s teething?! Yes, our little bundle of joy has just about every tooth possible coming in at once. Between the teething and the virus he picked up, he’s been a mess and consequently, so is Mom. But that’s another story.

As far as the teething goes, I have been lucky to talk to some very smart, natural people about how to handle this. There’s also some great information online, if you can sort through the mess of information (some true and some not) on the internet. Here is an article I found extremely helpful as I matched my son’s symptoms with the appropriate homeopathic remedy. Mommypotamous also has some great information on the subject. It is very important to watch your baby’s symptoms and to use the appropriate remedy for the best chance of success.

Dosage For Homeopathic Remedies:

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Truestar Health

So far Hyland’s teething tablets have not worked, but Camilia has worked like a charm! I am also experimenting with Pulsatilla and a homemade remedy made with Clove Bud Oil. I will keep you updated on what works best via the Facebook page.

Baltic Amber Necklaces

I also picked up an amber necklace for him. Baltic amber is a natural analgesic (pain reliever) that can have a soothing and calming effect on teething babies and toddlers. When amber is worn on the skin, (the necklace is not meant to be chewed), the skin’s warmth releases small amounts of succinic acid from the amber which are then absorbed into the bloodstream. (Note: consider for a moment the various soaps, lotions and fragrances you put on your skin. Toxins from the beauty products you put on your skin also make their way into your bloodstream). Amber’s anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are also recognized by allopathic medicine.

I picked up our amber necklace from The Nappy Shoppe in Plano, Texas, but you can also find them online. Be sure to buy your amber from a reputable source, as the amber must be real amber to work as explained above. Raw, unpolished, light amber is supposed to work the best, but be sure that the necklace you get for your child is safety knotted! Try searching “The Art of Cure” on Amazon.com if you prefer to purchase online.

Amber also has many benefits for adults as well. Natural healing amber necklaces can relieve pain in the head, neck and throat areas, and are good for congestion. They are also highly effective for controlling the pain of rheumatism, arthritis, and aching muscles and joints. Baltic amber is an anti-anxiety remedy that rids fatigue and weariness, fights chronic inflammation and restores energy. So of course,I had to try it for myself! Stay tuned for how that’s working for me.

Be sure that the amber necklace is in contact with your child’s skin. Also, the necklace should not be worn while sleeping. Instead, double wrap the necklace around the ankle. I alternate ankles each night.

What have you used to help your teething child deal with side effects of teething?

Peace, love and homeopathy,

Melissa

Hello and Happy Monday friends from across the globe! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend!

We are starting off this new week posting about what many might consider a rather touchy subject. It has come to my attention that several people may have experienced some frustration after I recently shared a photo on facebook of a sign in a doctor’s office stating that they do not give flu shots. I shared this photo because I believe it’s time people start realizing that just because someone (i.e. the media, Walgreens, etc) says you should do something doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. I wish more people realized that they have a choice whether or not to get the flu shot, a right to know what potentially dangerous chemicals it contains and possible drawbacks to getting it.

However, doctors and nurses everywhere save lives every day. They come to work day in and day out dedicating themselves to helping others. How many of us can say that about ourselves? So to doctors and nurses everywhere, here is me saying that I appreciate what you do for us. I think we are lucky to live in a country with amazing advancements in medicine, but I also feel that we should be doing more to prevent disease instead of treating symptoms or waiting for things to get bad, as they inevitably will without preventative care. My frustration lies in the media, big pharma companies and doctors that don’t listen.

Unfortunately it only takes one bad apple to tarnish a name. It’s that one dirty player that gives the team a bad reputation, the one ref that makes the bad call or maybe it’s a family with a misunderstood child. In this case, I feel that it is because of years of treatment by uneducated doctors that helped land me in the position I am today—dealing with side effects and issues from years of being over-medicated.

Flu Shots NOT Here!Do I believe in the flu shot? No, I most certainly do not. I think it does more harm than good. But we live in the United States, where we have the right to say, think and feel as we so desire. It is for that same reason that I withhold judgement towards others that DO get and believe in the flu shot. Am I going to vaccinate my children? Yeah, probably. Word on the street is that they can’t get into school otherwise. Am I thrilled about that? Not particularly. But I do think it’s great that my children won’t have to get the measles.

I’ve gained and continue to gain knowledge as I grow older, and one of the most important things to me is that people realize that there are two sides to every story. For instance, big pharma companies fund studies and publish research about how their drug cures “such and such” disease. Maybe it does, but there’s also about 100 side effects it causes as well, which are severely downplayed. Fruits and vegetables, physical activity and plenty of rest can prevent those diseases and even reverse ailments in some cases too, but no one can get rich off fruits and vegetables like they can a prescription medication. No one is going to fund research that proves vegetables can make you better because then what…? People might actually start eating them, and might become healthier?! If that happens, they won’t need the big pharma company’s medications, then the pharma companies go out of business—heaven forbid!

Again, these are my ramblings. There’s a million other people on the internet rambling about things you may or may not agree with. But my current thoughts and feelings stem from past experiences as well as my current state of well being which very honestly right now—is sheer frustration. Frustration because I feel like I was mislead for more than half of my life and am now paying the price. And most recently, frustration that I tell my ENT doc that I’m looking for a lasting drug-free solution to my problem, and he does just the opposite by writing me prescriptions for decongestants and steroids. He’s probably just busy, but he’s not listening. On the other hand, I have several natural doctors that I’m working with that do listen to me, and I feel as if they truly care about me. They treat me like a person, not a number, and are dedicated to finding natural solutions to my issues that will make me happy and healthy.

So to the doctors and nurses out there, thank you. Thank you for doing what you do, day in and day out. Thanks for understanding that the shared photo comes from a girl who’s quite frustrated, like yourself. In the end, we all want to be happy and healthy. So let’s band together!

Peace, love and understanding,

Melissa

So, assuming I hadn’t been at the point of full-blown ear infection, these remedies (particularly the salt sock remedy) would have worked. However, once it becomes an infection, these “cures” are no longer applicable. Here are a couple that I’ve personally tried:

Salt Sock

It’s nice and warm, and feels good against your ear. I prefer this method over the onion method, listed next.

  1. Take about 1 cup of course salt and pour into a pan on the stove.
  2. Stir or shake the salt until its very warm/hot.
  3. Pour salt into the sock (you may need to use a funnel) and tie the top with a rubber band to keep salt from escaping.
  4. Place the salt sock on your pillow and lie with the ear on the sock.  If you use a thinner sock, you can place a towel between the sock and the ear – but its not as effective.
  5. Rest here for as long as you can, at least 10-15 minutes.

Baked Onion

This also feels good against your ear, but…. it will also make your ear/side of your face/your house smell like onions… just a warning!

  1. Bake a small whole onion (two if you need one for each ear) in the oven, 350˚ for one hour.
  2. Remove the onion from the oven and place in a glass jar (mason jar if the onion will fit… you need the onion to be whole).
  3. Poke several deep holes in the onion with a fork, put the end of the jar to your ear immediately to catch the steam escaping from the onion.
  4. Tilt your head sideways and hold the steaming onion jar over your ear until the steam is gone… approx. 5-7 minutes. Once the steam is gone, you can try flipping the onion over and re-poking to release any additional steam it might be holding.
  5. If you do both ears, use the other onion for the other ear.
Please note, I am not a doctor. Please consult your doctor prior to trying any of these techniques if you have concerns. Thanks!

I completed the 21 days of the CLEAN Program a week ago now. For the first two days “post CLEAN”, I decided that wheat would be the first allergen that I would reintroduce into my diet. Unfortunately, on Day 3, I started to come down with a sinus infection. Ugh! All that hard work! Could it be that I actually have a serious wheat allergy? Or is this just bad timing since the seasons are changing, and in our area the temperature swings are +30 degrees in an hour? It’s so hard to say! However, I was determined not to let my 3 weeks of hard work go to waste. Since I couldn’t really tell if wheat gave me any side effects or if it’s just the changing of the weather that is affecting me, I have actually had to continue CLEAN for another week, throughout the sinus infection. I need to be able to introduce one allergen at a time, in order to figure out which trigger symptoms in my body. Unfortunately, I can’t begin this process until this infection is completely gone, after all, you can’t tell if something clogs your sinuses when they’re clogged from the get-go, so it looks like I will be on CLEAN for at least 4.5 weeks before I get to introduce these allergens!

Not only have I resumed CLEAN without interruption, but I actually cut carbs/sugars for a few days in order to starve the bad bacteria in my body. So it has been a ton of veggies for me! I’ve also heeded my chiropractor/muscle activation therapist’s advice, and started taking colloidal silver, olive leaf extract, zinc, garlic, etc. I’ve kept up my probiotics and of course, lots of apple cider vinegar to thin that mucous! Add in copious amounts of rest, lots of water and decaffeinated green tea, and four days later… I’m starting to feel better! I refused to go to the doctor for this, and it’s been tough. Had I gone, I know they would have given me antibiotics and I would probably be running around by now, but the damage I would have done to my lovely clean system I’ve built, would have been devastating to me. So I’ve toughed it out. After all, the purpose of CLEAN is to “restore the body’s natural ability to heal itself.” So I feel like this is the ultimate test! The timing is so ironic. I JUST finished this program. Now let’s see if my body can heal itself! It’s required SO much rest, I am so tired of my couch, but on the bright side, it did force me to complete the online Defensive Driving class I’ve been putting off for long enough now!

I hope to be able to update you next week with reports on the allergen introductions. But first, let’s get these sinuses cleared up! Off to bed I go!

As a follow up to my last post, Doctors, Toxicity and Detoxification, I feel the need to point out an additional major concern with the amount of prescriptions being written by doctors these days. Having been on antibiotics for about a decade growing up, it has caused many other problems, none of which I saw coming.

I was a teenager with bad skin. Shocking, I know. So the dermatologist wrote me a script for antibiotics. I took that for months/years until it stopped working, then they switched me a different antibiotic. When that one would stop working, they would switch me to another. This cycle would continue until the doctors were out of options for me. Now, ten years later, I have developed allergies to almost every antibiotic on the market, and if I’m not allergic to it, I’m resistant to it, so it doesn’t even work for me. Now when I get sick, I have to get a steroid shot in my rear-end and I have to orally take a steroid pack as well, possibly two, depending on how bad it is. It’s terrible. I hate the steroids so much that I actually just stopped going to the doctor for illnesses altogether. Now I just “tough it out,” as I’m not really left with any other options. Luckily for the most part, lots of rest and fluids works just fine.

WebMD recently posted an article, Antibiotic Overuse May Be Bad for Body’s Good Bacteria. Well, duh. When you take antibiotics, it kills the bad bacteria in your system. What most people don’t realize, is that it kills the good bacteria as well. You need that good bacteria. The good bacteria are responsible for helping make vitamins, boosting immunity and keeping your digestive tract in order. There are now theories (and circumstantial evidence) that killing these good guys could be causing or contributing to obesity, allergies, asthma, cancer and children’s type 1 diabetes. Not to mention that with an overload of bad bacteria in your system, you feel like crap.

“Dr. Blaser points out that in a developed country like the U.S., the average child gets 10-20 courses of antibiotics by age 18. Blaser says there’s no question that antibiotics, when given appropriately, save lives. But they’re not always used appropriately. Studies have shown that doctors often prescribe antibiotics before they know whether an infection is viral or bacterial. If the problem is a virus, antibiotics don’t help.” (Source: WebMD: Antibiotic Overuse May Be Bad for Body’s Good Bacteria)

It actually didn’t dawn on me how much damage my body was still experiencing until about a year ago, when I was having a conversation with my Muscle Activation Therapist. We were talking about my diet, and I mentioned that I can’t eat sugar because I can’t just have “one cookie”, it has to be the entire box of cookies. That once I eat a little bit of sugar, I just can’t get enough, and that I am constantly craving it. I didn’t know back then that when your body is craving sugar, that is when it is most critical NOT to eat it. He asked if I had been on antibiotics for a long period of time in my life, of course the answer being yes. Well, that was the problem right there. My poor little good bacterias were trying to stay alive, but the bad bacterias had taken over. It’s like a little war going on inside my body. My poor body, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know the damage I was causing. Bad bacteria make you crave sugar. They feed off of it, and when you give into those cravings, they eat it, multiply, and then you want MORE sugar. So not only are you increasing your sugar cravings by eating sugar (seems backwards, I know), but you are also increasing the population of bad bacteria in your body. Bad bacteria, bad, bad. Go sit in the corner.

With an overuse of antibiotics, you develop a yeast overgrowth, also called a candida infection. This infection affects a large amount of the human population today, as it is also caused by the not-so-wonderful-after-all “Pill”, as well as the abundant amount of sugar in our diets, which promotes the growth of yeast. Instead of combatting this problem with more antibiotics, natural remedies like probiotics are a good solution.

Probiotics are friendly or “good” bacteria. Not only will taking probiotics help kill the bad bacteria, but they have other health benefits such as a greater immunity to infectious diseases, improved digestion and higher energy levels. I am not a doctor, but I recommend going to your local health food store and asking for some help selecting the best probiotic. You will find them in the refrigerated section within the vitamin/supplement section. You are probably saying, “Oh, I already take probiotics, they’re in my yogurt.” Just a quick note about probiotics in yogurt… Very often, commercial yogurts are pasteurized and the bacteria are dead. Even if they are alive, these yogurts generally contain high amounts of sugar, which we know encourages the growth of yeast. Lastly, milk and dairy products tend to worsen the symptoms of candida infection. So, your call, but I would check out the pill form of probiotics.

The world that we live in scares the crap out of me on a daily basis. I’m constantly second-guessing people like doctors, who we are supposed to trust, even seemingly common enough foods are made with ingredients you can’t pronounce, what is this world coming to? This isn’t by any means meant to be a negative post. Instead, the purpose of this blog is really to open your eyes. The more educated you can become, the better decisions you can make regarding your food, your medications (or lack thereof) and your body. It’s your body, and you only get one life to live in it. Let’s do everything we can to make it one amazing life, inside one, amazing body.

The more whole you live, the more free you become.

Doctors. They’re supposed to help us, right? We see them when we have issues we can’t solve on our own. We make an appointment, it takes weeks to see them, we wait through long delays in the waiting room, then when we see them, we put our trust in them that they will help get our bodies back to functioning normally. Not to mention that we also pay them pretty good money to do so. Unfortunately, after all that, it is a very difficult task these days to find a doctor that will take the time to listen to you, to help you find the right solution to your problems.

Think about the typical experience once the doctor actually gets around to seeing you. On average, they spent 5-7 minutes with you, if that, their prescription pad in their hand the entire time. You barely get done speaking, and they’ve already got 2 prescriptions written for you. Even worse, if you’ve seen this doctor, or any other doctor before, chances are good this is your fourth or fifth prescription. In my experience, every single medication you take treats one thing, but leaves you with several other unwanted side effects. So how to you put an end to those side effects? With more medication of course! Is anyone paying attention to all the medications we’re currently taking, and what their chemical interactions with each other are? It kills me. I suppose it’s literally killing me as well. Which is why I’ve decided to rid myself of all medication. It’s been a slow process, as it should be, but I know it will be worth it in the end.

Even when I was younger, I didn’t like changing doctors often, because I felt like it took so long for the current doctor to get to know me and my body, I didn’t want to have to start all over. How can someone help me if they don’t know the whole story? They can’t. I generally don’t feel like doctors do a very good job of fixing the problem, because they’re always treating the symptoms and not looking for the root cause. I don’t blame them entirely, I know that most of them are just doing what they have been trained to do in our Western world, regardless of their intentions. Dr. Junger (creator of the CLEAN Program) was able to travel to India to learn and practice medicine and healing there. He brought back to the United States his Eastern practices, which include using ancient herbs, chiropractic care, diet, massage, acupuncture and hands-on healing. He began getting to the root of his patients’ troubles, he didn’t just treat the symptoms. He refers to it as common sense. I love that.

In today’s society, we are sent to specialists for just about everything. According to Dr. Junger, many of the health problems that trouble so many modern humans and cost society so much money can be alleviated by taking a broader approach, focusing on reactivating the potential of the detoxification system.

“A focused period of detoxifying is a reset for the whole physical and mental body. It delivers an all-access pass to boundless reserves of energy you didn’t know you had. You find that every part of your body works better, imbalances are rectified, and irritating symptoms get a chance to melt away on their own—all by your simply “switching on” a system that you were born with and that has been patiently waiting to serve you.” (4)

Maybe you don’t have a serious health concern, but you feel “off.” There’s something to be said for that. Symptoms like bloating, fatigue, itchiness, moodiness, sneezing, constipation, mental fog, nightmares and swelling may indicate that you are just slightly off balance, or that some type of disorder is about to surface. It’s important to stay ahead of this game, so that you don’t have to worry about reversing diseases later in life.

Toxicity isn’t recognized as a condition in modern medicine. And sadly, if you ask some doctors about it, they will call it quackery.

According to Dr. Junger, “Doctors who are skeptical about the value of detox programs such as Clean will argue that there is nothing in “the literature” to support it. What they mean is that when you search the medical database, you find no scientific studies or published research on such detox programs. Databases only contain what the editors decide to include, making them biased toward Western medical studies with Western protocols. The research game is biased before it begins. The cost of large-scale double-controlled placebo studies makes pharmaceutical companies the only ones that can afford to fund them. It’s not good for business to prove that vegetables and fruits can be the most powerful medicine.” (4)

We live in a modern world, with modern inventions and technology, but our planet is becoming more and more toxic. From the air we breathe, to the foods we eat, the water we shower in and even the clothes we put on our body, we are overexposing ourselves to harmful chemicals. Our bodies aren’t able to handle this overload, and so we become toxic, damaged and out of balance. “Our thinking and habits need to evolve or our bodies will die of dust while we hold a state-of-the-art vacuum cleaner in our hands.” – Alejandro Junger, M.D.

It’s time to start taking our lives into our own hands.

Live Whole and Be Free,

Melissa
